Frenchman indicted for raping and assaulting 89 minors: appeal for witnesses launched

The 79-year-old man perpetrated the crimes between 1967 and 2022, in France and nine other countries. The man, who was indicted and imprisoned in 2024, also admitted to the killings of his mother and his aunt.

Jacques Leveugle, aged 79, is accused of raping and sexually assaulting 89 minors. The crimes would have taken place between 1967 and 2022, in France and abroad.Although he was indicted and imprisoned in 2024, the Grenoble public prosecutor's office stepped up the media coverage of the case on Tuesday 10 February, in a bid to track down other potential victims and witnesses. At a press conference, Grenoble public prosecutor Etienne Manteaux detailed the facts: in his "confessions" compiled on a USB stick, Leveugle mentions "sexual relations" with minors aged between 13 and 17. The texts were discovered by his nephew, who was "wondering about the emotional and sexual life" of his uncle, the prosecutor said at the press conference.Born in Annecy in 1946, Jacques Leveugle was, according to the prosecutor, in contact with minors throughout his career. He trained as a specialised educator, but did not complete his training. He then worked in youth camps, educational stays for young people in difficulty and tutoring. These various posts led him to work in several countries. In his notes, Jacques Leveugle mentions at least eight countries: Switzerland, Germany, Portugal, Morocco, Niger, India, Colombia and the Philippines. All places where there might be more victims, the prosecution assumes. His last assaults are said to have taken place in Morocco in 2022.Rape, sexual assault and murderIn his "confessions", Jacques Leveugle also talks about two killings. He allegedly suffocated his mother, who was suffering from terminal cancer, with a cushion in 1974 in Maisons-Laffitte (Yvelines), and also allegedly killed his aunt in 1992 using the same method. She was 92 years old.The 79-year-old was indicted and remanded in custody in February 2024. He was then placed under very strict judicial supervision, which he did not respect. Since April 2025, he has again been in pre-trial detention, in Isère.The investigation is being conducted in France and abroad. The public prosecutor appealed for witnesses on Tuesday in order to identify other victims.A toll-free number for witnesses and victims to contact the authorities has been set up:0 800 20 01 42.
