Attempted bomb attack on the home of the opposition leader in Australia: A 16-year-old is on trial.
A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with an attempted attack. It has been reported that the youth planned to carry out the attack using explosives and a drone.
Australia's opposition leader Peter Dutton confirmed that his family's home was targeted in a bomb attack attempt. However, he added that the incident would not hinder Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's campaign for re-election in the federal elections on May 3. Speaking to reporters in Perth on Friday, Dutton praised the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for ensuring his family's safety. "I am incredibly grateful to the AFP for keeping my family safe. I never felt unsafe for a single day in this matter. This hasn't stopped me from doing anything, and it won't stop me in this campaign either," he said. According to a report by The Australian, which cited unnamed sources, the alleged attack plan involving explosives and a drone was aimed at Dutton's home in Brisbane, where he lives with his wife and three children. A 16-year-old boy has been charged with planning a terrorist act, and it has been decided that he will be tried in the Queensland Supreme Court on Thursday. Due to his age, the young man's name has not been disclosed, and he was arrested last August. If found guilty, he could face life imprisonment. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that he reached out to Dutton after the incident came to light and mentioned that he also experienced a "very serious event," but did not wish to provide further details. In a statement made in Darwin, Albanese said, "There has been an increase in the number of threats against MPs recently. There is absolutely no place for such things in politics." Following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in 2023, many MPs' offices, including Albanese's office in Sydney, were vandalized by pro-Palestinian activists. Police chief Reece Kershaw testified before a Senate committee last month that they had intervened in 1,009 cases of threats against politicians during the 2023-2024 financial year. This figure marks a record, reaching 712 cases by March this year. Dutton, a former minister responsible for immigration and border security, noted that he has been under high-level security protection since 2014. "I canceled the visas of many motorcycle gang members, rapists, and organized crime figures, and I would not hesitate to do it again," he said. James Paterson, the Liberal Party's campaign spokesperson, also stated that Dutton and his family now require "24-hour personal police protection." Despite the threats, Dutton expressed that he is determined to continue his election campaign.
