Police blockade at the event "Young People Meet with Erkan Baş": 43 people detained.
The event was held at Gülhane Park in the Fatih district of Istanbul.
The event, organized on Thursday with the participation of the General President of the Workers' Party of Turkey (TIP), Erkan Baş, ended with a police blockade. A post published through the X account of the Workers' Party of Turkey Students group reported that 43 people had been detained. Erkan Baş stated in a statement he shared on X that he learned “that the young people on their way back were unlawfully detained by the police while on the way to Çağlayan Courthouse.” He mentioned that he went to the courthouse to support journalists Timur Soykan and Murat Ağırel, who were detained and referred to the court with a request for arrest. Baş noted that he would go to the young people's side to follow up on the detentions after the situation in Çağlayan became clearer. The Workers' Party of Turkey gathered in front of the party provincial building in Kadıköy at 21:30 in response to the detentions. A call followed by nearly 40,000 people on X ended with a press statement. It was stated here that “They once again revealed their fears by surrounding the youth in Gülhane Park. Our lawyers are following the situation of our friends who have been detained at the Istanbul Security Directorate.” Later in the hours, a video was published from the party's X account showing the police cordon during the blockade. In the video, Baş is seen telling someone recording them, “Don't do it, brother, don't do it. A person doesn’t do what they should be ashamed of. I defend everything I do. What happened, did it bother you, why are you turning your face? You see it, right, look, they are recording the camera, hiding their face. Why? Because they know they are doing something illegal. You are all doing the same illegal thing, they hide their face, but your face is open.” Eskişehir was another place outside Istanbul where the detentions were protested. In the footage, a group of party members can be heard chanting slogans like, “Detentions, arrests, pressures cannot intimidate us,” and “Shoulder to shoulder against fascism.” The poster published for the promotion of the event featured the phrase in large font, “History will write the youth, but how?”
