Biden Calls for Investigation into Election Issues in Georgia
U.S. President Joe Biden expressed deep concern about the state of democracy in Georgia following parliamentary elections in the country. Biden stated that there should be a comprehensive investigation, highlighting instances of resource misuse, coercion, and voter intimidation during the elections held on October 26.
According to official results, the ruling Georgian Dream party received approximately 54% of the votes on Saturday. However, allegations of electoral fraud have been raised by Western-oriented opposition parties and the President of Georgia. In response to these allegations, the central election commission announced today that a recount would be conducted at around 14% of the polling stations.
The European Union, NATO, and the U.S., along with observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe and other organizations, called for a thorough investigation into the reported electoral irregularities.
In a statement from the White House, President Biden remarked, "I am deeply concerned about the recent democratic backsliding in the country." He urged the Georgian government to transparently investigate all alleged electoral irregularities and to reverse legislation that restricts the rights to assembly and freedom of expression.
Western governments have expressed concerns about a perceived shift by Georgia towards closer ties with Moscow, distancing itself from European integration. This change is viewed as significant given Georgia's status as an independent state for over thirty years since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The investigation into electoral practices is considered a critical measure for maintaining democratic integrity in the region.
