The EU has announced the list of 47 strategic metal projects.
The European Commission has published a list of 47 strategic projects aimed at increasing the production of 14 out of 17 critical materials essential for the EU's energy transition and security. This initiative is part of the implementation of the Critical Raw Materials Act, which was adopted in 2023, with the goal of extracting 10% of the block's needs, processing 40%, and recycling 25% by 2030.
AB Industry Commissioner Stephane Sejourne stated that "Raw materials have long been a blind spot in our industrial policy. Europe has preferred to source most of its essential materials from outside its borders." The list includes vital metals such as aluminum, copper, and nickel, along with key battery materials like lithium and rare metal elements used in wind turbines and electric vehicle permanent magnets. The projects span 13 EU member states, including Belgium, France, Germany, and Italy, focusing on extraction, processing, and recycling efforts.
