Apple May Launch AirTag 2 in Spring
Apple is preparing to refresh its popular tracking accessory, AirTag, which was introduced three years ago. According to a new report, the company is working on various innovations for the second generation AirTag, expected to launch next year. AirTag 2 is anticipated to be unveiled in Spring 2025 alongside refreshed iPad Air models and new M4 MacBook Air models.
AirTags have garnered significant interest by assisting users in locating lost or misplaced items. The company is developing new features for the device, aimed at facilitating the recovery of lost luggage by sharing item location information with airlines. According to information from Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter, Apple plans to release the second generation AirTag in mid-2025.
First details about the second generation AirTag were previously provided by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who mentioned that the new accessory would launch next year. However, there is a discrepancy among analysts regarding the timeline. While Mark Gurman expects AirTag 2 to launch in Spring, Kuo states that mass production has been pushed from the last quarter of this year to next year. The reason for the delay has yet to be disclosed, but there remains a possibility for an earlier market release of the tracking device.
AirTag 2 will feature an improved chip for better location tracking and is likely to utilize the second-generation ultra-wideband chip introduced with the iPhone 15 series. Mark Gurman notes that the new device will be equipped with a built-in speaker, which will serve as an anti-tracking measure. Additionally, it is expected that its design will remain similar to the current model, while its range will be significantly increased.
On the other hand, Kuo had previously indicated that AirTag would be integrated with the Vision Pro headset; however, the specifics of this integration have yet to be clarified.
