Tokyo Stock Exchange Extends Trading Hours for the First Time in 70 Years to Attract Foreign Investors

Forex - The Tokyo Stock Exchange has extended its trading hours by 30 minutes starting today as part of efforts to make the exchange more attractive to foreign investors and promote trading activities. According to a statement from Japan Exchange Group Inc., the operator of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the extension of the closing time marks the first change in 70 years, with the Tokyo market now operating from 09:00 to 15:30 local time, including a one-hour lunch break. The trading hours were last adjusted in November 2011 when the closing time for the morning session was extended by 30 minutes to the current 11:30. According to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which lists approximately 4,000 companies, the extension also aims to give investors more time to trade in case of any issues such as system outages.
