Foreign Investors Ramp Up Stock Sales
During the week of October 18-25, foreign investors sold a total of $217.8 million worth of equities. In the same period, foreign investors acquired $41.9 million in Government Domestic Debt Securities (GDDS) and $7.4 million in Private Sector Bonds, resulting in a total of $168.5 million in securities sales. This indicates the volatile movements of foreign investors in the Turkish capital markets.
In Borsa Istanbul, the BIST 100 index gained 1.31% during the specified dates, while there was a 17 basis point increase in the 2-year benchmark bond yield. Since the beginning of the year, foreign investors have sold a total of $2,538.5 million in equities. Conversely, in the same period, they purchased $14,136.8 million in GDDS and $343 million in Private Sector Bonds. These figures indicate that foreign investors continue to show interest in the GDDS market.
Throughout 2024, foreign investors have made a total securities purchase of $11,941.2 million. Looking at the past year, there was $570.6 million in equity sales compared to $15,501.2 million in GDDS purchases and $349.1 million in Private Sector Bond acquisitions. During this process, a total of $15,279.7 million in foreign inflows to the securities market was recorded.
As of October 25, the share of foreign investors in the equity market stood at 37.6%, up from the previous week's figure of 37.5%. At the end of 2023, this share was 38%, compared to 36.4% a year earlier. These figures highlight the variability of foreign investors' share in the equity market over time.
