China Raises Tariff and Sanction Concerns at US Economic Working Group Meeting

During a recent meeting in Washington, the Chinese Ministry of Finance raised issues related to US tariffs and sanctions related to Russia. The discussions took place during the Economic Working Group meeting between the two countries. Liao Min, China’s Vice Minister of Finance, represented the Chinese side while in Washington for the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Liao Min also had the opportunity to detail China’s latest stimulus policies aimed at supporting the world’s second-largest economy. The meeting with US Treasury Under Secretary Jay Shambaugh marked the sixth such session aimed at promoting economic dialogue between the US and China.

Following the Economic Working Group meeting, Liao Min held a courtesy meeting with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. The Chinese Ministry of Finance did not disclose any specific outcomes from these dialogues or any future steps. This meeting between economic officials from the two countries took place during a period when international economic relations are under scrutiny and trade policies are of significant importance to global markets.
